Press Release from Party Leader on General Election Results 2007

As I indicated in an address to Party supporters at the People's National Party's Headquarters last night, I would today state my position on the close preliminary results of yesterday's general election and other electoral and constitutional issues.

The determination of the constitutional issues by the court, as well as the final count in all seats could have a bearing on the outcome of this election.

The People's National Party accepts the announced preliminary results, while reserving all legal rights under the Jamaican constitution and our electoral laws.

The former PM needs to get over it and extend a olive branch to the government elect. The people have spoken so there is no need to try to get back in through the backdoor by all these constitutional motions. The country cannot afford for any more of its sons and daughters to be murdered for political gain.Let us all stop this nonsense sister P and put country first. Now is the time to unite the people and institute the values and attitude campaign.Let us respect the national flag and all symbols representing the country's heritage and our struggles. We have lost a whole generation who became unpatriotic due to lack of education about what Jamaica stands for.It is a shame that people still don't know the words of the National Anthem. Now that the country has changed course let us all get on board and put aside our narrow political biases.
    Congratulations to the JLP.......

The Prime Minister will extend no olive branch, we were never at war - The PNP has always come in peace...

You have a right to support the JLP, but do not tell us what to do -

We are citizens of this country and we fully intend to pursue the remedy for our constitutional rights which were violated by the JLP in this campaign...

As a leader of this country and in particular as president of the PNP Portia Simpson-Miller would be neglectful of her duties if she were to allow this bunch of labourite chauvinist con-artists to escape sanction...

We do not support and will not indulge in any misdemeanour whilst we have legal recourse - we will do whatever we have to do within the provision of the law...

I fully support my leader and inasmuch as I have voted for her to handle my political affairs she has my full backing to ensure that my constitutional rights are protected -

Go and advise Bruce to prepare our cheques for the school fees that we have paid, the PNP does not need your directive...

Most people would be embarrassed to have to force themselves on a country the way you guys are trying to do, but then again when has your party ever shown any class?

The majority of the people want the JLP. Leave them in peace. You have wrecked enough lives. I know you guys need to get back power so you can embezzle more money, but jeez man... let it go.

Portia you have accomplished alot for yourself and for Jamaica. No matter what you will always be the first female Prime Minister and you have a lot to be proud of. No one hav eever fought an election and brought it this close. You are the only woman in the Caribbean the be featured in Forbes most powerful Women Issue. You are the longest serving MP in this country. The year you held Office as Prime Minister is the best This Country has ever seen. Be of Good Cheer. We want to hear from you. So all you critics of Portia get off her back!!

Portia, I am so glad you lost its not funny. You are a nice woman but your behavior in the past especially in response to Audley Shaw was a total disgrace and you know better. Also why weren't you better prepared for the debates. You were almost a total disaster.

As a Jamaican first, I gave nuff thanks that the Portia and the PNP have lost this election. I find it extremely hard to believe that nearly 50% of those who voted, voted for the PNP. Did they want more of the same? We urgently need to educate our people, to move Jamaica forward.

    #7 Yabbyyoo on 2007-09-05 12:24
The 50% who voted for the PNP has good reason to vote for them. It means that they appreciated what they did during the period they were in office. Not all of jamaicans are ungrateful. No matter, what they have done a lot of good for this country and its people. My only regret is that they made the rich, richer. but then to get something you have to give something in return.

We need to move on so could we all stop the bad mouthing and the bickering please. In the end no one benefits.

Would you mind outlining some of those reasons? And please don't come with the tired argument of Manley did this, and Manley did that. Sorry to have to be so brash, but Manley is dead. Can you tell me what PJ and Portia did for the average Jamaican except to send them into poverty?

The fact that after eighteen years the PNP got almost 50% of the votes speaks volumes. its simple the people of Jamaica dont trust the JLP. It is normal for a government to be voted out of office after two terms and after four terms the JLP cannot win a election fair. The JLP had to pay DANVILLE WALKER to win this election, did you see Mr. Walker on tv the night of the elections, He could not look in the cemara and talk, he too was surprise that after he sent the wrong papers to the polling stations Sister.P still came out so strong. He had to halt the counting for the night.

I'll like to say that i am happy the JLP has won, finally we have gotten rid of the PNP. You people that support the PNP is something wrong with you? do you enjoy what has been happening to the country, i guess you do enjoy it. So many of you are living from han to mout, and yet you praise the PNP. You stand behind a party that offers nothing, you enjoy their pockets getting fat while yours diminish. Please tell me the benefits of the PNP. I am a 22 year old young woman and i was give up my citizenship if the PNP was elected again. I was fed up, and all i have to say is good riddance PNP, no more money for you to steal Mr. Omar Davies, Praise God the suffering has ended.

Yes the JLP are criminals, since 1980 the JLP connot win a election, and guess what they had to buy out Danville Walker to win this one, see what he did, sent wrong papers to the polling stations so that a lot of PNP supporters could not vote. I have five votes in my house our names were on the voters list when we check two weeks ago, and when we went to the polling station only one was on the list there. JLP are criminals.

Any fool can see that the JLP was for sale to the highest bidder, and the money did pour in beacuse they expect something in return . Talking about the 40 million dollars that Sally Porteous alone got for central manchester to run against Peter Bunting from the cash plus group.
Richard Azan lost ..... a wonder why ? Did buying votes play a part in that too?
To sista P. you have defied the critics of becoming prime minister and despite everything a nuff love still from all of us.
All your comrades need to rally around you and show that this is a great PNP party and is much bigger than any one person.
The JLP are a bunch of inexperienced wanna-be politicians.
But I urge co-operation from both sides and put the interest of Jamicans first. This will be a short-lived JLP administration.

I just laugh when i read these response, I have a good memory, and i still remember how the labourites behave in 1980 when they won the elections, and guess what by 1982 you same one were begging for the return of Mr Manly, only time will tell. At that time the PNP were swept out it was JLP 52 SEATS PNP 8 SEATS and thats the only elections you labourites have won from then. its a reason why you JLP cannot win a election by a wide margin since then. the only one the JLP has ever one since 1980. the PNP has every thing to be proud of. it is clear that the people of Jamaica dose not trust the JLP. So leave Sister P alone.

Well I finally figured out that the PNP base of support is huge because it's made of two types of people:

    1. The really rich who get richer under their rule.

    2. People who aren't used to anything good, and so are willing to accept any type of crap.

That's a hard combination to beat, which is why they have been winning for so long.

I'm about to venture back home too, JLP all the way. I left five years ago when it became obvious that the blood sucking vipers didn't give a flying f--k about anyone other than themselves and those who could give their party money.

in my opinion ,my profile of the pnp voters--the fall in several groups--group one---people who benefit from government contracts [YOU MUST BE PNP TO GET THOSE CONTRACT] and their dependents. group 2, the extremly large amount of civil servants who were hired because of nepotism -cousins ,uncles,exgirlfriends,brother-in-laws etc, group 3--the much older old members of norman manleys era, although their numbers are getting lower through attrition, there are still a few out there--this group would never vote jlp even if god ordered them to do so. group 4--the uneducated die-hards ,this is the most dangerous of all the abovementioned, they rank between iliterate and semi-iliterate, they will kill you just for wearing a green sweater, non-partisan as you may be. they are animalistic and subhuman, many problably have an IQ just south of retarded. they have no ideaology ,they will follow the pnp whichever way the win blows, they are stupid and irredeemable-but i have to say they are a product of educational neglect--a neglect from the same government that causes them to select that government ,since they make up a large percentage of the electorate. what irony

All I have to say is this...the jlp might have one by a slim margin. But the reality is that the PNP has lost 7 (oh, there goes that '7' again) seats (and counting). I can't see how people support the PNP either. If I were in gov. for 18 years, I should not be struggling to retain power. Heck, I shouldn't even be campaigning.

Your statement on election night was nothing short of a monumental disgrace. It proves that you have no intention to put people first it was all about Portia and GOD SPEAKS.

Congratulations to Bruce Golding and the JLP. now it is his turn to ensure you retire or be sacked or worst yet be put in prison for all the atrocities of your wretched party. I once used to Love you Portia until your bodyguards killed my cousin in 1980. Revenge is sweet.

I garrantee the same is going to happen again. this world nolonger strives on promises of freeness again. all you labourites want is freeness, one thousand dollars and a belly full SHAME.

How was the election close? The JLP won by 10 seats. We must remember that there are 10 official garrisons in Jamaica, 7 belong to the PNP, 3 to the JLP. Those garrisons will never vote for another party no matter what. Thus, minus the 7 from the PNP's 27 and that leaves you with 20. Minus the 3 from the JLP's 33 and that leaves you with 30. So 30-20 was the real seat count. PNP really needed to go though, they are a disgrace to what Norman Manley intended the party to be about.
