On Sunday July 13, 2008, Vice President Comrade Dr. Peter Phillips threw his hat into the ring, announcing his intention to challenge incumbent President Comrade Portia Simpson Miller. Comrade Simpson Miller said that though it was unprecedented for a sitting Party Leader to be challenged, she accepted it nonetheless and was ready for the contest.
